Thanksgiving Cleaning Checklist: A 2-Week Countdown
The most common Thanksgiving mistake is not the turkey. It is trying to clean the whole house on Wednesday while also brining, baking and finding enough chairs.
This checklist spreads the cleaning over two weeks. Each step is short, and each one is done in the order guests will notice it: the door, the bathroom, the table, the kitchen.
Two weeks before
The big, slow jobs that cannot be rushed.
- Clean the oven (it needs time to cool and air out before you roast in it)
- Clear the fridge and freezer to make room for the bird and the leftovers
- Wash the good tablecloth and napkins; check for stains while there is time to treat them
- Count chairs, plates, glasses and serving dishes; borrow or buy what is missing now
- Declutter the entryway and coat closet so guests have somewhere to put coats
One week before
- Deep clean the guest bathroom: shower, toilet, floor, mirror
- Wash guest bedding and make up the guest bed
- Dust and vacuum the living room and dining room
- Wipe light switches, door handles and the front door
- Clear the dining table completely (it is about to become a buffet)
Two days before
- Clean the kitchen counters back to empty and run the dishwasher empty
- Set up a drinks station away from the kitchen to keep the cook's path clear
- Put out a fresh hand towel and a spare toilet roll where guests can see it
- Empty every trash can and put a spare liner in the bottom of each
The day before
Cooking day. Cleaning here is maintenance only.
- 15-minute reset of the main rooms: surfaces clear, cushions straight, quick vacuum
- Set the table
- Clean as you cook: fill the sink with hot soapy water before you start
Thanksgiving morning
- Empty the dishwasher before guests arrive, so it can take the first load
- Wipe the guest bathroom sink and mirror
- Take out the kitchen trash
- Light the candles. Stop cleaning.
What guests actually notice
| Notice | Do not notice |
|---|---|
| The bathroom, especially the sink and towel | Inside the cupboards |
| Smells: trash, drains, the fridge | Dust on top of the door frames |
| Somewhere to put their coat | Whether the baseboards were done |
| A clear path to the table | The state of the garage |
Spend your time on the left column.
After the holiday
Most people dread the morning after more than the day before. Run the dishwasher overnight, do a 20-minute reset in the morning, and go back to your normal routine on Monday. The Sunday home reset is built for exactly this week.
If you want a routine that keeps the house guest-ready all season, the weekly cleaning schedule takes thirty minutes a day.
